Today, I want to talk about the idea of learning different things. I grew up playing tennis and being very heavily involved in sports to the degree of literally living, dreaming and breathing tennis. I was headed towards a pro-career but I got injured when I was 17. What that experience gave me is learning an abundance of things about how to be successful and the success principles that are applied to sports.

I had the incredible fortune and experience of being trained by some of the best tennis coaches and best conditioning coaches in the world. From a very young age, they instilled in my mind the right principles.

It’s the same mindset

I learned great skills from tennis that when I transferred those skills to the business world, I had a rapid transition between starting a company from scratch to reaching 7 figures in less than 3 years. When I took the skills I learned in tennis, I was able to grow a company much faster in revenue and in personal satisfaction.

If entrepreneurship was my first venture and if I hadn’t had any training or any experience in other areas like sports, it would’ve been more difficult for me to make my first company a success. One thing that I found truly rewarding for my company is to learn from different industries. About twice a year, I tackle and attack a new industry for my personal education and I find it fascinating to learn from different places.

Mastering new topics

For example, in the last 6 months, one of the industries that I’ve been digging into really deep is the hedge fund world. What I do is I go to Amazon and I order the top 15 or 20 books about that topic, read all the books and immerse myself into watching documentaries that I find on YouTube.

I really love the concept of giving yourself a few hours a week to learn about different things and different businesses because it gives you an abundance of perspective, it gives your mind diverse elements to work with and it gives you a completely different point of view.

What I normally do is I would pick a topic that is completely different to what I’m doing now, select an industry and just dig in. What’s going to happen after a few weeks of studying a specific topic is you’ll be more proficient at that topic than 99.9% of the general population. It will give you massive insights in your business. All the biggest breakthroughs I’ve had in my business occurred when I stepped away from what I was doing and I started digging into a new industry for new insights.

One my biggest passion is reading about the entertainment business. I’ve produced a few movies and I’m working on a couple feature films. I was about 15 years old when I started reading about movies and when I was about 20 years old, I started reading about the movie business and that gave me massive ideas and breakthroughs in my own business. You can get ideas and concepts from different businesses that don’t exist in your industry. Applying those different concepts can really have a dramatic effect and have huge leverage points in your business.

Try doing this: pick an industry you want to get familiar with, go to Amazon and order the top 20 books about that topic and then commit to reading one book a week. I can honestly tell you that you’ll be more proficient on that topic than 99.9% of the population. I can guarantee that you’ll have greater perspective and will come up with new angles and ideas to implement in your business.

What are your thoughts? I would love to hear from you! 🙂
