Book of the week

This is a book from one of the legendary CEO’s on modern business. The book is called “Winning” by Jack Welch. I don’t have any dates here but I think I read it 6-7 years ago.

Jack Welch was the CEO of General Electric. He knew how to win during his 40 year career in GE. He led the company in multiple markets against competition. When GE was in a really bad situation, he took the company and dominated that space in multiple verticals. I think this is an amazing book and I think every entrepreneur or business or manager should read it. What I really like about this book is that, first of all, it’s about real life experience. This is what I always look for in books.

I always have trouble taking advice from people who haven’t done anything, who haven’t accomplished anything or haven’t physically done anything. In my opinion, this guy has seen it all. I love reading bios and just getting into people’s minds. If you’ve been following my story, I also invest, produce and act in movies, because I love to get into people’s minds to see how they think.

This book is very easy to read and it has very specific steps that you could implement in your company. It actually summarizes the main thing we do in our companies in terms of management, because most of the steps that we implement are taken from Jack Welch.

At the beginning and end of the week, we have a 5 minute one on one talk with everyone on the team or we tell our managers to have that with people on their teams. Obviously, you can’t have it if you have dozens of people and we can’t always have the one on one with the managers, but they’ll have their conversations at the beginning of the week and at the end of the week.

At every beginning of the week meeting, it summarizes what needs to happen for that week. It’s a 3 to 5 minutes call and then, at the end of the week, it’s an overview of what happened during the week like when the person did good, what he needs to improve, how is everything going and for me, that’s the best way to be very honest and candid with your employees.

In my opinion, this is one of the best management books, even though it’s not really about management. Someone said that, “no other management book will ever be needed” and in this case, I think it’s true, because I actually have read a lot of different management books and most of them were just theory. That’s one of the reasons why I don’t connect well with them and I really like this book because it’s very practical. If you’re a manager, you definitely want to pick up Jack Welch’s “Winning” book.
