#1 is, owning your brand and you need to own your brand. You need to do everything you can to seize the properties that are available online with your name. Let’s say your name is John Smith, you need to own johnsmith.com and johnsmith.org. You also need to own John Smith on Facebook like facebook.com/johnsmith and twitter.com/johnsmith.

Chances are, that name is already taken but you really need to own your name and you need to own your name on all the properties. I would do Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, Vine, Medium, LinkedIn, Google plus and everything that you can get a hold of because it’s really worth owning. It’s also free so you might as well do it. You need to own a virtual real estate or your own rented properties on all those social media platforms and also, owning your business name.

For example, if you own Vegetables Inc., you want to have Vegetables Inc. for every single platform. You want to have facebook.com/vegetablesinc or twitter.com/vegetablesinc. You want to own your name and the properties for every social media platform that’s out there. The first person who owns them, owns them because it’s going to be very complicated to go back and try to exchange or buy social media names.

If you don’t have them yet, go back and just get everything because owning your brand is essential. I remember when Facebook and all these social media platforms came out, people have the ability to own their own URL. People were having URL’s like “twitter.com/pizzalovingfunguy85”. It’s funny for a few hours but when you get down to business, how’s that going to help you?

Think of your brand and think of your full name. If possible, you want to have your name and you want to have your business name, company name or your shop name on all properties. The reason why is: most of the tips I’m going to share with you are based on owning something. You need to have your own page, you need to have a Facebook page and Twitter accounts. You also need to have a page that’s one for you and one for your brand.

You need to have Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, Medium and LinkedIn. All these different platforms is step one because very few businesses use all these networks. Owning your name on social media then owning your brand is the first step because then, you actually own something. You don’t own Facebook or Twitter but you’re basically renting the name. It’s free so you might as well do it.
