Hey there. I’m Matthias and thanks for checking out this page. Let me share with you a few stories of my life and what got me to where I am today.
I’ve always had huge dreams and the work ethic to reach them.
My first “business venture” involved publishing and selling a monthly printed magazine I wrote at the age 8. My parents had a subscription to National Geographic, so I would read and summarize my favorite articles (usually about animals, travel and unexplored parts of the world) every month, type and format them and sold my very own monthly magazine to schoolmates, teachers and neighbors.
It made me about $20/ week, which is like a billion at that age :D.
From the earliest I can remember, my entire life revolved around sports – ice hockey (which I *loved* and still love, judo and swimming (which I hated) – but mainly, tennis.
That’s when I fell in love with competition, focus and dedication and it’s also where I got my first taste of challenges and my love for winning and peak performance.
After being deemed “not talented enough” by tennis coaches at age 12, I set my goals on becoming the best player in the country (Switzerland). To accomplish that, my plan was simple: outwork and practice twice as much as everybody I was competing against. And it worked.
At age 14 and for the following years, I won the national championships and was ranked the number 1 junior in Switzerland and represented the country on the World Junior Tour and at multiple European and World Junior Championships. It enabled me to achieve an all-time high ranking in the top 15 European players of my age group and gave me the opportunity to compete against players like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and others.
After a string of solid results on the European Tour, I was recruited by Peter Carter (Roger Federer’s coach and mentor at the time) to join the Swiss Tennis Federation and train full-time alongside other top professional players.
During that time, I was fortunate enough to train with “The Master” himself: Roger Federer. After Peter’s passing in a tragic car accident that year, I suffered a career-halting leg injury, which forced me to reevaluate my tennis goals and ambitions.
It was a crushing injury: I tore my thigh muscle over 9 inches and wasn’t allowed to move for weeks. It took almost 9 months just to be able to walk normally again and almost 2 years to be able to trust my body again.
Being away from the courts during the recovery process gave me a lot of time to look within and dig into one of my other passions: entrepreneurship. I started my first internet business (in the online advertising and publishing space) at the age of 17 while I was laying in my bed, injured.
(I actually started selling on the internet at the age of 14 in the year 2000. I resold video games on eBay, which was my first experience in online sales and marketing.)
After recovering, I went back and played on the pro tour (in the Future and Challenger categories) for a few years and got to travel the world again and meet and compete with amazing people.
But in the spring of my 21st birthday, I contracted a severe case of pneumonia (twice in the span of 3 months) that forced me to go through 47 days of antibiotics due to the disease not being well diagnosed by the first doctor I consulted.
It was a tough, tough time and I felt like suffocating every time I was walking up the stairs.
Being a pro athlete dedicating every day of your life for years to reach the goal of having a long and successful career and experiencing two major health issues made me realize how fast life can change from one minute to the next.
It also made me realize that my body was not the “unstoppable machine” I once thought it was.
Shorty after recovering from pneumonia a few months later, I decided to retire from tennis and focus 100% on the business I had started a few years earlier. (I still play every now and then for fun…)
Transitioning from pro sports to running and growing my business full-time didn’t leave me any time to dwell or feel sorry for myself.
Over the years that followed, the internet companies I launched and grew resulted in operating hundreds of websites and numerous collateral businesses in 3 different continents, ranging from an online publishing company with over 25,000 customers, a call center business with over 30 telephone sales agents, and an online advertising and media company.
My core expertise consists in helping businesses and brands use cutting-edge internet marketing strategies to generate more visibility, more leads, more sales and increase their ROI.
I love helping businesses grow and expand their exposure (through social media marketing) and multiplying revenue with direct response marketing and sales (through online advertising, phone sales, webinars, etc.) which have generated over 50 million dollars for my companies and for my clients and partners.
I’ve written 2 books (one in English, one in French) about business and entrepreneurship and have spoken at conferences in the United States, the U.K., the Netherlands, France and Switzerland.
I’ve also scripted and given over 1,000 live teleseminar and webinar sales presentations and have advised hundreds of businesses ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies and CEOs. My companies have given over 3,000 live sales teleconferences.
Currently, I run ZuraMedia, an agency that helps brands increase exposure and sales through social media marketing and helps businesses generate leads 24/7 on the internet. Click here for more information.
My other big passion has always been acting and making movies. My production company has produced 2 short films and is currently involved in making commercial feature films in which I’ll also be acting.
I’ve always dreamed big and I love the daily hustle of working hard day in and day out. I really believe that if you’re willing to go the extra mile and put in the work, anything is possible.
Oh, and I’m a huge ice hockey fan (Capitals and Senators!) and love hitting the rink when it gets cold outside and play with the local teams (I play left wing ;-)…
